Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A small white clapboard house with a gray shingled gable roof stands on sandy ground between palm trees, with dune grasses in front and the ocean visible on both sides.

Sizing and installation quality are not abstract concerns here. Homes in Honolulu County, HI run cooling in every month of the year. The compressor, the condenser fan, and the contactor never get an idle stretch where a marginal install can hide. A contractor quoting a new system has to get the load calculation right on the first pass, because an undersized unit runs longer cycles against a heat load that never fully lets up, and the parts that cycle most carry the cost of that.

Ductwork routed for a system that has since been replaced at least once carries the decisions of whoever built and retrofitted it, and those decisions shape what any new central AC unit can actually do. Half the homes in Honolulu County, Hawaii were built in 1977 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor sizing new equipment against existing duct runs has to establish whether those runs can carry the airflow a current system delivers, which means opening access points and measuring, not reading the permit. The electrical service is the second check: panels in houses of this vintage were sized for loads that bear little resemblance to what a modern condenser draws.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric grayscale illustration of a cutaway house interior showing a furnace with ductwork, interior rooms with furniture, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines at the exterior wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the two components that do the heaviest work in the refrigeration cycle. Inside, the air handler or furnace-mounted evaporator coil lives in a closet, attic, or utility room and is the piece cooled air passes over before it moves into the house.

The refrigerant line set runs between the indoor and outdoor units, carrying refrigerant back and forth through insulated copper tubing. The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives you direct control over the system, while the condensate drain line runs from the indoor coil to a nearby drain to carry away the moisture the coil pulls from the air.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece fits the specific conditions of your home.

What Honolulu County, Hawaii Requires for HVAC Installation

Hawaii’s contractor licence does not reach a project whose total price for labour, materials, taxes and everything else is not more than $1,000 — but that exemption falls away whenever a building permit is required, whatever the price, and it never applies to part of a larger job.
