Step 1 of 3: Equipment

The compressor in a central AC unit here starts and stops through nearly every month of the year. Homes in Kauai County, HI run cooling about eleven months a year, from March through January. Contractors working repairs in this county find that the contactor, the condenser fan motor, and the compressor itself show wear that reflects how little rest the system gets between seasons. A refrigerant leak or a hard-starting compressor is not simply a sign of an aging unit; it is the result of a system that has been cycling through heat and humidity with almost no extended downtime. A contractor has to establish actual runtime history before deciding whether a part failed early or on schedule.

Ducting in much of Kauai County's housing stock has been adapted more than once, and what a contractor finds when the unit comes open reflects that history in the physical condition of the components: corroded coil surfaces, refrigerant lines whose insulation has hardened and cracked, and drain pans that have worked loose from earlier retrofits. Half the homes in Kauai County, Hawaii were built in 1983 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A repair call in a house like that can widen once the system is open, because the part that failed is sometimes protecting a second problem behind it. Parts availability for equipment running in adapted ductwork of this age is the other variable a contractor has to price before the job is quoted.

The Parts of a Central AC a Contractor Checks First

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms, ceiling ductwork, an indoor air handler unit, and an outdoor condenser connected by lines along the exterior wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and it carries the compressor and the condenser coil. These are the pieces a contractor reaches first when a system stops cooling, because a failed compressor or a dirty, damaged coil will shut down the whole system.

Inside the house, the air handler holds the evaporator coil and the blower fan, usually in a closet, attic, or utility room. The refrigerant lines run between the two units, and the thermostat on the wall tells the whole system when to run. Any of these can be the source of a problem.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply to your specific home.
